Your Responsibilities:

An exciting new opportunity exists for elucidating drug discovery challenges for an autonomous image analysis / computer vision / machine learning scientist to join the DDA (Digital, Data and Analytics) team in Platforms, Technology & Science (PTS) which has innovation and creativity at its heart. Within the group, you will be managing matrix teams as well as collaborating with external partners to deliver innovative computer vision / data science solutions for GSK.

The use of image data and analytics across the R&D organization has become a critical imperative in the transformation of the R&D process. Hence, you will have the opportunity to work with the strategically important data type of images and implement cutting-edge data science/computer vision methods based on your own experience, learning and results from data science experimentation. It is an expectation for you to publish your work, represent GSK at international conferences and speak about your work as an expert.

Job Purpose, what you will be doing:

You will have responsibility for the design, development and implementation of machine learning / computer vision / image processing tools within GSK, specifically for the goal of helping to “Transform the way we discover new medicines”.

You’ll develop Proof-of-Concepts and Prototypes of novel computer vision / machine learning and image processing techniques.

You will get the opportunity to provide computer vision, machine learning and image processing scientific consultancy expertise.

Management external collaborations with appropriate solution providers.

You’ll be part of a team to help understand, predict and analyse the translatability of data from multiple different experiments involving multiple different data types with image data in drug design and selection.

Be part of a team to help create a platform for the fusion of multiple different data types with image data through novel computer vision, machine learning, image processing and mathematical techniques to help transform the way we discover new medicines

Key Responsibilities:

  • Set the strategy for data analytics and computer vision at GSK
  • Deliver innovative machine learning and computer vision solutions for GSK
  • Managing matrix teams on bespoke computer vision projects
  • Work with R&D teams on designing, building and deploying image data solutions for large and very large datasets
  • Identify emergent trends and opportunities for additional data/image analytical development and subsequently evaluate new technologies
  • Working closely with external collaborators
  • Act as subject matter expert on strategic endorsed initiatives
  • Representing GSK in discussions with external parties
  • Adopt good scientific practices in all phases of the research and development process
  • Securing and protecting GSK’s intellectual property in computer vision, image processing and machine learning technology

Basic qualifications:

  • MSc
  • Experience leading computer vision teams and delivering state of the art products.
  • Hands on experience with machine learning/computer vision applied to specific projects
  • Hands on experience with mathematical modelling, signal processing, raw unstructured data analysis
  • Excellent knowledge of mathematical fundamentals of machine learning and computer vision methods and probability theory
  • Combination of mathematical ability with algorithms, machine learning and coding
  • Programming skills like MatLab, Java, Python, Spark, C++ and an awareness of SQL (Database Management)
  • Knowledge of Hadoop or similar
  • Experience using open source computer vision tools such as OpenCV,
  • Experience with open-source machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow, Theano, Caffe
  • Ability to pick up a high level overview of new topics in the life sciences
  • Excellent oral & written communication and presentation skills, with ability to communicate confidently and customize based on level of use and need to build strong relationship networks across the organization.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the drug discovery and development process would be helpful but not essential
  • Worked with drug discovery (biology and chemical) datasets in the past
  • A deep knowledge of image analytics and the deployment of solutions within a diverse environment
  • Software validation and testing processes understanding
  • PhD in STEM field or equivalent work experience
